THERE is a treble-header of cup final action on Sunday as the cricket season reaches the business end, with the Cumbria County Cup decider being the chief attraction.

Holders Furness aim to make it a hat-trick of cup triumphs this year when they face Workington, having already collected the South Lakes Twenty20 and, most recently, Higson Cup silverware.

Scott Pearcey’s side overcame Carlisle in last year’s final in what was a low-scoring game, with the eventual champions bowling out their North Cumbrian counterparts for 99 in reply to their tally of 136.

They have also beaten Workington twice this year, triumphing by 95 runs in the North Lancashire and Cumbria League Premier Division at home in May.

That was followed by Furness romping to a nine-wicket victory the next day in the ECB National Club Championship on the back of an unbeaten 66 from just 55 balls from Nathan Waterston.

So Pearcey and his team-mates will no doubt be confident of defending their crown in the final at Haverigg’s Poolside home, although Workington will be eyeing an upset too.

Haverigg, currently bottom of the Premier Division, do have the opportunity to gain some silverware this season though when they take on local rivals Millom in the Ted Smith Cup final at Kirkby on the same day.

And there is another Furness derby taking place for cup honours too, with Ulverston and Millom facing off for the Harold Marsden Cup.

First of all, however, tomorrow’s league games take precedence and Haverigg will be aiming to haul themselves off the foot of the Premier Division when they travel to Whitehaven in the battle of the bottom two.

Elsewhere, Millom are at home to Keswick, Dalton travel to title contenders Cleator and Furness head to Wigton.

Kirkby’s Division One title hopes suffered a blow last week when they lost to leaders Egremont and Mike Fugler’s side will aim to bounce back when they make the trip to Hawcoat Park.

There is a long journey ahead for captain Fugler and eight of his team-mates once the season is over though as they will be tackling a coast-to-coast bike ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.

The ride will take place between Friday, October 12 and Sunday, October 14 to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice, the Kirkby Community Centre redevelopment fund and the club itself, and they can be sponsored at https://www.gofundme.com/kirkby-cc-coast-2-coast

Tomorrow’s Northern Premier League fixture sees Barrow at home to Fleetwood.
