LINDAL Moor are four games away from making a historic return to Lord’s, after their latest victory in the National Village Cup.

Moor – who reached the final of the competition in 1977, but lost to Cookley – won their regional final at Read, near Accrington, on Sunday.

Chris Scrogham was the hero with the bat as he blasted an unbeaten 84 to help the visitors overhaul Read’s 40-over total of 207 for 9 with seven wickets in hand and with 5.5 overs to spare.

Scrogham enjoyed a massive 132-run unbroken partnership with Lee Hogg (47 not out) as Ed Waind’s side set up a home clash with the winners of the Cheshire and Clwyd final.

A century from Will Wrathall was the highlight of the Read innings, with the stand-out bowler for Lindal being experienced seamer Craig Crawford.

The former Ulverston and Duddon player took 4 for 17 in an excellent eight-over spell.

Tom Gregg, Waind and Chris Moore picked up a wicket apiece, while veteran left-arm spinner John Atkinson produced a tidy spell of 0-30 in eight overs.

In reply, Moor lost Alastair Grunshaw for eight with the score on 29 and fellow opener Paul Wilcock was dismissed for 29 at 58 for 2.

Waind made 26 before being bowled, and so began a match-winning partnership between Hogg and Scrogham, who blasted 12 fours and two sixes in his explosive 78-ball innings.

After claiming three more victims against Millom in their North Lancs League Premier Division match on Saturday, Atkinson now needs only one more wicket to become the highest-wicket taker in Lindal’s history.
