LINDAL demolished Wigton in North Lancs Division One to go top of the table with a game to go, writes COLIN BICKERSTAFFE.
Batting first at Pennington Lane, leaders Wigton were all back in the pavilion with only 54 on the board.
The returning Colin Knight’s opening burst of 10 overs gave him 3 for 11 and deputy pro Jay Zia, with 3 for 13, Andrew Parkinson, 3 for 15, and John Atkinson, 1 for 9 off nine overs, were too much for the Wigton side.
In reply, Lindal Moor lost two wickets getting the winning runs, Andrew Parkinson finishing on 30 not out.
The only bright spot for Wigton was 14-year-old Nico Watt, whose excellent leg-spin gave him 2 for 7 off four overs.
Lindal are now 11 points clear at the top.
Third-placed Kirkby were at Vickerstown and batting first must have been worried at teatime after being dismissed for a moderate 126, of which Paul Tyson made 62.
Gareth Benson took 6 for 44 for Vickerstown.
Kirkby’s bowlers came to the rescue as the Walney side struggled throughout but just failed to get the win as they were dismissed for 117.
Young teenager Ryan Tyson took five for 15 with his pace bowling.
This win puts Kirkby in second place, four points below Lindal Moor and seven points above Wigton. Next Saturday will decide which two of these three sides play in the Premier Division in 2009.
After being robbed by the rain of a good win last week, Ulverston took victory at Egremont this week.
Batting first, only Ulverston’s Gareth Yates, 27, and Stuart Cooper, 23, made significant contributions to an all out total of 104. Egremont’s Richard Booth took 5 for 18.
In reply, Egremont lost wickets at regular intervals and could only make 64 all out. Gareth Yates took 7 for 32 in 13 overs.
Hawcoat Park were at Cleator II, where the home side batted first and were 140 for 9 after their 50 overs, Joe Fallon taking 4 for 38.
Hawcoat Park’s batsmen struggled but managed to hang on for a draw at 105 for 9, Simon Dutton making 42.
Keswick II went down to another bad defeat at home to Appleby. The visitors reached only 137 all out, but Keswick were skittled for 39 all out. Appleby pro. Sampath taking 7 for 13. Lanercost at home to Workington II batted first and were all out for 142. Matthew Brown making 76.Workington II went to a 4 wicket win at 145 for 6, Stephen Miller top scoring with 65 not out.
Workington II had a four-wicket win over Lanercost.
In the Premier Division, Workington needed to win in their home game with Penrith to clinch the title.
Penrith took first knock and worked hard to put 159 for 9 on the board.
In reply Workington lost an early wicket, but Callum Moffat, 29, and Simon Beare, 69, pulled things around.
When they were out, the Workington middle order failed for once and the last pair had to get five for the win.
They did so, giving their side the Premier Division crown.
At Furness Park, Keswick openers Darren Collin and Glen Weightman made 50 and 51 respectively and a big score looked on.
But they had to be satisfied with 206 for 8 after 50 overs, with Furness all-rounder Mark Daly taking 3 for 57 in his 15 overs.
In reply, Furness got off to a steady start, with Glenn Capstick and Majeed Jehangir gaining control.
When Capstick went for 37 and Jehangir for 67, only Will Chapples, 29, gave Keswick problems and when overs ran out Furness had settled for a draw at 179 for 9. Pro Dinuk Hettiarachchi and Stuart Dowson each had three wickets for Keswick.
At Millom, Justin Quint’s all-round ability made it a bad day for the Higson Cup winners.
Dalton were 226 for 8 at tea, with Quint’s 116 controlling the innings. Millom’s Adam Kelly took 4 for 41.
In reply, Millom were always struggling with number seven batsman Andrew Dawson top-scoring with 39 as Millom were all out for 125. Quint had 2 for 9 in 10 overs and Dalton pro Willem Van Zyl 4 for 56, but Quint was the difference between the two sides.
The two relegated teams met at Askam, with Duddon SC playing Carlisle.
At tea Duddon SC cannot have been too happy with a moderate 129 for 9 on the board, Matthew Gribbin top scoring with 28.
Craig Foxcroft and Stephen Johnson each took three wickets for Carlisle.
Carlisle were soon in trouble, only skipper Mark Brown with a hard-earned 40 got them to 101 all out.
Six Carlisle batsmen were lbw, Gary Stephenson, 4 for 8, and Joe Alexander, 3 for 25, doing the damage and giving Duddon only their second win of the season.
Cleator gave Cockermouth a good hiding, knocking them over for 127. They had no problems and went to a nine-wicket win at 128 for 1, Paul Duffett making 83 not out.
Haverigg travelled to Whitehaven but did not get a game. Whitehaven refused to play after the umpires altered the boundary, which they are entitled to do, to exclude a part of the ground that was waterlogged and could have been dangerous for fielders in that area.
With the boundary altered, umpires then told both captains play could start.
Haverigg agreed to play, but Whitehaven refused.
The league committee will have to sort that out.
In the Northern League Division One, Barrow were made to suffer by Chorley’s 18-year-old opener Josh Tolley.
