Cents back in title hunt

DOUBLE strikes from Dave Nicholson and Matthew Elliott got Walney back on the winners’ track when they came from behind to beat Folly Lane, writes PETE WILSON.

A game that began badly for Cents – their Manchester hosts shot into a 12-0 lead – ended with a convincing 28-12 victory to push them back into the title hunt in Division One of the North West Men’s League.
In addition to the four tries of Nicholson and Elliott, Jamie Morrow also touched down and Mark McKinley (3) and Dave Bell (1) shared the goal-kicking.
There was mixed fortunes for the National Conference clubs who had to hit the road into Yorkshire.
In Division One, Millom gave league leaders Hunslet Warriors a run for their money. Tries from Anthony Green and Marcus O’Brien gave the visitors an 8-6 half-time lead but they eventually went down 20-8 to the South Leeds side.
Division Two side Askam got back to winning form with a 30-22 success at Eastmoor Dragons and coach Mike Wilson can now plan to lift his young side up the table.
A late collapse proved expensive for Barrow Island on their trip to Ashton Bears. Leading 10-4 at one stage, Island leaked four tries in the final 20 minutes to crash to a 30-18 defeat. Matt Jefferson, Ben Garner and Jack Sutherland were the Rating Lane side’s try scorers.
Ulverston’s scheduled home game with Cadishead Rhinos was just the latest in a string of cancellations that has plagued the first summer season of the North West League. It was just one of eight fixtures that failed to take place for a variety of reasons. Hindpool Tigers and Roose Pioneers were also without games over the weekend.
