WEST Mount B inflicted a shock defeat on Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens' Bowling League Division Two leaders Kirkby.

The Mount triumphed 7-3 to cut the Villagers' lead at the summit to 15 points – though their title hopes should not be affected with just four matches to go.

In form for the victors were Mike Boulton, Bob Ward and Ron Kendall, while Don Marshall’s 21-2 win was the pick for the leaders.

West Mount A’s 8-3 loss at home to Walney Park A all but ended their interest in the promotion stakes, with the Park side now in pole position to join Kirkby in going up.

Single-figure wins from Jeff Stubbs, 21-9, and Billy Dodding, 21-5, were the cornerstone of the Walney success, with Mike Hodgson responding for the Mount with a 21-6 victory.

Co-op A continue to push to the end following their 8-3 result at Roose A, on the back of single-figure triumphs from Barry Gill, 21-3, and Dave Watterson, 21-5.

Glaxo are the third team who will fancy their chances following their 9-2 win at Hawcoat Park B. Eric Worsley, 21-8, and Alan Slater, 21-9, were their leading men.

Dalton CC A were 8-3 victors at West Shore A, a result which sees the sides change places in mid-table.

In the remaining matches, there were wins for King Alfred A and Co-op SC B against Salthouse A and Askam respectively.

In Division One, the most significant encounter was Hawcoat Park A’s game with relegation rivals North Scale. Park took it 7-3 to close to within two points of the Walney side with all to play for.

Barrow Island beat King Alfred 7-3 at Cavendish Park, where merit leader Jeff Hinde suffered his first defeat of the season, 21-9 at the hands of Island’s Bill Burgess.

Barrow Island A suffered a 9-1 defeat at Lindal, their point coming from Peter Minnis.

Salthouse knew they were in for a tough day when found themselves without a win after four games. Brian Beard, 21-3, was West Shore’s best in a 9-2 victory.

Despite winning three of the first four games, Roose’s hopes took a dive as Co-op claimed the final four and commanded a healthy lead following Ian Hall’s 21-5 triumph to seal the aggregate.

Walney Park and Askam shared the game, but the village side claimed the aggregate for a 7-4 win.

In the remaining match, Ulverston Cons' 7-3 defeat of West Mount all but assures them of another year in the top division.
