IT was a bad day for four out of the five sides at the foot of the Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens’ Bowling League Division One.

The exception to the rule were West Mount, who gained a 9-1 home win against fellow strugglers North Scale. As a result, the villagers are second-bottom.

Mount moved up four places as Steve Hocknell and Bill Millard both triumphed 21-8. Tommy Gauntlett gained North Scale’s point.

Barrow Island’s recent upturn in form continued with an emphatic 9-1 defeat of Salthouse at Cavendish Park.

In a good all-round team effort, there were victories for Harry Dagger, John Hulston and Mike Bram, with Salthouse’s win coming from Tommy Benson.

Barrow Island A fared less well, losing 8-2 at Askam. The Wearing brothers, Dick, Cyril and Barry, all claimed their games for the villagers, while Tom Elliott and Brian Linklatter were successful for the Old Barrow side.

Dalton CC found it tough going at Co-op SC as they lost 8-2, with Peter Garner, 21-3, and Les Vickers, 21-8, winning to single figures, a feat Alan Edwards, 21-8, achieved for the Cricketers.

Leaders Hawcoat Park slipped to only their third defeat of the season, 6-4 at Lindal. Having shared the games four each, there were only two chalks separating the sides, but that was enough to give Lindal the aggregate.

Life is proving difficult for Hawcoat A, as they lost 9-2 at home to Roose Community. The loss leaves them a single point above the relegation places.

The remaining match resulted in a 9-2 home defeat for Ulverston Cons against champions West Shore. The Cons find themselves hovering just above the relegation places, with a game in hand which they have to benefit from if they do not want to risk a quick return to the lower division.

In Division Two, Kirkby shared the games at Daton CC A four each, but secured the aggregate to claim a 7-4 win and remain well clear of the trailing pack.

Their trip to King Alfred A saw Walney Park A suffer a blow to their promotion hopes as they dropped four games. They did claim the aggregate points to triumph 7-4.

Walney Park B were dismantled 10-1 by West Mount A, only averting a whitewash due to victors' inability to field a full team.

The closest match saw Roose A and Askam A play out a 5-5 draw, with the visitors' five games not enough to deliver the aggregate.

Co-op SC B were in good form, beating neighbours West Mount B 9-2. Despite the result, it was West Mount’s Ron Kendall, with a 21-3 single-figure win, who had the best return.
