ULVERSTON Cons stole a march on Barrow Island A in the Furness Senior Citizens Bowling League Division Two promotion race with victory at Church Walk.

Cons triumphed 7-3 in the battle of the leading contenders to go up and find themselves in pole position.

Despite having led the table for most of the season and having lost fewer fixtures, Island trail by seven points, having played a match more.

Merit leader Jeff Benson, 21-8, was impressive for the Cons, as was Keith Birkbeck, while Tom Elliott and Jack Adams were in the frame for the Old Barrow boys.

Second-placed Co-op SC A shared the games at Askam A but claimed the aggregate to win 7-4. Despite their position, they have played too to be realistically in with a promotion shout.

Among their victors were Dave Harwood, 21-7, and Don Barrow, while Roy Proctor, 21-7, took a point for Askam A, with support from Frank Murray.

In the all-Walney affair King Alfred A beat Walney Park B 8-2, with single-figure successes for Ces Turnbull, Cliff Callister and Jim Murray. Roger Quayle scored for the Park team.

Roose Community A were triumphant 8-2 against neighbours Salthouse A as Trevor White, 21-8, and Brian Taylor, 21-7, impressed. Stuart Patton and Jim Weston, 21-8, responded.

In Division One, there were wins for leading sides West Shore and Hawcoat Park to leave them level on points, with Hawcoat having played a match more.

Park beat Askam 7-3 – a result which pleased Askam more than the hosts as they picked up valuable points in their climb to safety.

In form for the club side were Paul Cain, Bill McLaughlin, 21-7, and Tony Kneale, 21-7, with Askam’s response coming from Norman Milburn, Roy Whatley and Ted Tyson.

At West Shore, the hosts defeated Hawcoat Park A 8-2, with Peter McDonald, 21-4, and Nick Reilly, 21-9, leading from the front. Hawcoat’s response came from Alan Artis and Dave Lee.

Third-placed King Alfred slipped to a 6-4 defeat at the Co-op. Having shared the games, the hosts took the aggregate. The pick of the wins saw the Co-op’s Dave Watterson triumph 21-4, with Jack Kolbe among the Alfred’s points.

Form team Dalton CC won 9-2 at fifth-placed Salthouse. They must be regretting patches of inconsistency throughout the season or they would have been right up there challenging.

In the frame for Dalton were Derek Buck, 21-9, Roley West and Bryan Woodburn on his return from absence. Salthouse’s wins came from Ron Burley and and Stan Edmondson.

Kirkby proved too strong for Lindal at the Community Centre as 9-1 victors, with Tom Blackledge stopping the whitewash. Andy Waring made it eight from eight for Kirkby, with support from Barry Rigg and Dave Tray.

Barrow Island beating Roose by the same score at Cavendish Park, with Derek Leech 21-8 and Alan Postlethwaite 21-9 heading up the point. Roose’s winner was Graham Gedling.

West Mount and Walney Park shared the games four each, with the latter claiming the aggregate and the match 7-4. Stan Halesworth, 21-3, led for the Park side, with both Kenny Baines and Brian Sharp winning 21-8 for the Mount.
