GLAXO'S Kevin Toal found the winning formula to concoct victory in the Ulverston and District Bowling League Division One play-offs.

Toal came through a field made up of two players from every team to take the triumph on an excellent green at a sunny Kirkby Bowling Club.

Toal convincingly defeated Barrow Island's Stuart Turnbull in the final of the Alan Myerscough-sponsored competition.

The Glaxo man took an 11-2 lead after 10 ends and increased his advantage to 18-6 after 18 as he controlled the game throughout. He took the win at 21-9.

On his way to the final, Toal started out by beating Mike Fieldhouse (Post Office) 21-10. He followed up with a 21-12 win against club-mate Simon Brown.

In the quarter-finals, the champion-to-be came up against King Alfred’s Steve Fullard and booked a last-four place with a 21-10 success.

He then defeated Roose’s James Duffin 21-12 to reach the final.

In other half of the draw, Turnbull opened with a 21-7 win against Lindal’s Alf Moore and 21-9 success Ken Knowles, of Askam.

In the quarter-final, he beat King Alfred’s Mike Hool and, in the semi-final, he came up against merit winner Roy Moxham, of Hawcoat Park.

They produced the outstanding game of the day, with the result in doubt right to the end. Turnbull’s 21-19 win claimed his place in the final.

Following the final, league sponsor Margaret Myerscough presented the awards to both finalists, along with the merit award to Moxham.

The league thanked Kirkby BC for staging the event, along with the ladies for providing refreshments throughout the day.
