STEVE Smith took the spoils at the Lindal Bowling Club Summer Open Singles.

Smith saw off team-mate Darren Naylor 21-19 in a thrilling finale to the Andy Armstrong-sponsored event. It looked as if the final was going to be a stroll in the park as he raced to a 12-1 lead, but Naylor was not for giving up.

He fought back to reduce the lead to 12-7, then 14-9 and 16-11 before he amazingly led the jack at 20-19 and was lying game, only for Smith to clip the block with his last wood and claim the title and a place in the Grand Master final.

The champion started his day with a 21-12 success over Alex Spelman, followed by wins over Harry Preston, 21-6, Tony Whitehouse, 21-17, and Gareth Jones, 21-15.

Naylor opened his account with a 21-11 victory over Alan Edwards and then gained success against Dave Bennett, 21-7, Dave Dickinson, 21-16, and Daniel Smith, 21-13.

Lindal Bowling Club thanked Andy Armstrong for his support once, the ground staff, kitchen staff and bar staff, and all the markers and measurers.

The next open tournaments at Lindal are the Ford Open Pairs, on Sunday, July 31, and the Brown Quality Meats Pairs, on Sunday, August 7.
