THE newly-promoted sides found the going tough in the first week of the Furness Senior Citizens’ Bowling League season.

Division One of the competition, now sponsored by Deltawaite Ltd, saw all three teams who came up last year on the end of 9-1 defeats.

Division Two champions Ulverston Cons found the Lindal green difficult as they avoided a whitewash courtesy of Rae Postlethwaite’s win.

North Scale made the short journey to neighbouring King Alfred, where they suffered the same fate, with Jack Charnley being their sole points-scorer.

Barrow Island A, meanwhile, faced a difficult opener at Hawcoat Park, where Peter Minnis was their victor.

Another game which saw a 9-1 home win was Co-op SC's triumph over Walney Park, with Dave Dawes, 21-4, and newcomer Alan Fay, 21-9, among their winners. Walney’s point came from Stan Halesworth.

Last season’s champions West Shore also won 9-1 when hosting Roose. They had five single-figure winners, with Roose’s success coming from Graham Gedling.

Salthouse made a solid start, 7-3 against Askam. With the games tied at two-each, the Raglan Street side came through in the second half. Their leading win came from Tommy Benson, 21-7.

The closest game saw Dalton CC and West Mount share the games four each, with the aggregate going to the Cricket Club.

Division Two has seen the withdrawal of Ulverston Cons A due to a shortage of players.

The sides left in the competition claimed just one away triumph between them, with the remaining games all going to the hosts.

Co-op SC A were 8-3 winners at Walney Park A to be the exception, with single-figure successes for Roger Wood, 21-2, Don Barrow and George Ackred.

Askam A had a comfortable 8-2 victory against Salthouse A, with newcomer Barry Wearing enjoying a winning start.

Relegated Dalton CC A, having suffered a loss of status along with a number of players, struggled at West Mount A, losing 8-2.

Following the example of their A-team, West Mount B made it a club double with a 7-3 defeat of King Alfred A.

The remaining game saw Roose A beat visiting West Shore A 7-3, with single-figure wins for Derek Yates and Jack Crabtree. Pat Fogarty responded for West Shore.
