KIRKBY claimed a key win in their quest for promotion to Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens Bowling League Division One.

The leaders claimed an 8-2 victory over rivals Glaxo SK, with Roger Tyson’s 21-5 success their standout result.

Glaxo’s points came from Eric Worsley and Tony Gorman.

Kirkby are building up an almost unassailable lead, and lead the standings by 23 points.

There are five sides trailing in their wake, with 13 points covering the spread. All will consider they have a fair chance of joining Kirkby in going up.

West Mount A sit second having defeated their B-team 9-1.

Two points behind are Roose A, who also won 9-1 at home to Walney Park B, for whom Ray Visick staved off the whitewash.

Co-op SC A are a side on the periphery, but a 8-3 triumph at Salthouse A gave their hopes a boost, Don Barrow and George Ackred taking 21-3 victories.

King Alfred A shared the games with Askam A, but claimed the aggregate for a 6-4 win; while elsewhere on Walney, West Shore were slipping to an 8-3 loss to Co-op SC B.

In Division One, season-long leaders Hawcoat Park suffered a rare defeat as Walney Park inflicted a 6-4 loss.

Having shared the games four apiece, the Walney side claimed the aggregate. The standout win came from Ian Fairclough, 21-9.

Second-placed King Alfred also shared the games on their visit to Askam, but the aggregate points gave them a 7-4 away success. Merit leader Jeff Hinde was forced to scrap to hold on to his unbeaten record, as he beat Askam’s Derek Buck 21-20.

Third-placed West Shore came away with an 8-3 victory at Hawcoat Park A, with Brian Chelton and Charlie West among their winners.

A gap has opened between these three and the following group, headed by the Co-op. They drew 5-5 with Barrow Island, who shocked the home side by taking the first four games. Despite adding another, the Old Barrow tea, were unable to claim the aggregate, settling for a draw.

Lindal’s impressive home form continued with a 9-1 win over Salthouse, whose sole winner was Jimmy Weston.

The bottom two sides met at Cavendish Park, where visiting North Scale beat Barrow Island A 8-3, a result which makes the Old Barrow side's survival prospects remote.

Another game which saw the away side win 8-3 was at Church Walk, where the Cons went down to visitors Dalton CC.

The remaining match saw West Mount and Roose share the games, with the former claiming the aggregate and a 6-4 win.

There were single-figure victories for the Mount's Kenny Baines and Roose’s Chris Corkill and Bill Bowes.
