CHAMPIONS-ELECT Hawcoat Park suffered a heavy defeat in Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens’ Bowling League Division One, going down 9-1 to King Alfred.

The most disappointed man on the green must have been Alfred’s Jeff Hinde, who suffered his team’s only loss.

The recompense of his side winning would do little, as the season-long merit leader was replaced by opponent Bill McLaughlin.

In the wider scheme, there were good wins for Tony George, Steve Hogg and Jack Kolbe.

Second-placed West Shore were 9-2 victors at North Scale, a result that leaves the Villagers with a mountain to climb in their final game if they are to avoid avoid a quick return to Division Two.

In form for West Shore were Charlie West, 21-8, Brian Beard, 21-7, and Alan Crighton, 21-8. North Scale’s points came from Ian Dalton and Keith Hurley.

Hawcoat Park A’s 8-2 home success against Lindal all but guaranteed survival, short of a disastrous final result.

They were indebted to Jimmy Bawden, Tony Kneale and Dave Hodgson, with John Crompton, 21-6, and Chas Crellin winning for Lindal.

There were 6-4 victories for Roose and West Mount over Dalton Cricket and Barrow Island respectively, results of note coming from Kevin Boyd, 21-4, and Mike Watt, 21-4, for Roose, with Kenny Baines, 21-6, the pick at West Mount.

Barrow Island A lost 9-2 to Salthouse, for whom Jim Weston and Stan Edmondson both triumphed 21-9. Co-op came out on top 8-3 at Askam, with Ian Hall and Albert Head both taking their games 21-6.

In Division Two, the game at Kirkby was overshadowed by the passing of Club stalwart Rod Woodend.

West Mount A provided the opposition, and Kirkby were able to triumph 9-1 to celebrate their title-winning campaign.

Their leading winners were Dave Tray, 21-4, and Don Marshall, 21-9, with West Mount’s point coming from John Turley.

Co-op SC A overwhelmed Askam A 9-1. Bill Sear prevented a whitewash.

The fight for the second promotion place is down to Walney Park and Glaxo. The two met at Glaxo, with the home side winning 6-4.

With Walney having completed their games, Glaxo trail by seven points going into their final match. This leaves the works side knowing what they need to do at King Alfred.

In the remaining encounter, Dalton CC A beat Roose A 7-3, with Ron Bryers, 21-7, and Jimmy Bridle among the winners.
