HAWCOAT Park A took centre stage in the Ulverston and District Bowling League at last as they became the final team to gain a victory.

And, having waited 19 matches of the Alan Myerscough-sponsored competition, they did it in fine style with a brilliant 13-1 win over fellow Division One strugglers Barrow Island.

Kenny Judge and Ronnie Woods were the stars of the show for the Park, with Stew Turnbull continuing his fine form at top man for Barrow Island to save the whitewash.

While the A-team were celebrating, Hawcoat’s first team were involved in a top-of-the-table clash as they visited Glaxo.

There has been little between the teams all season and this encounter did nothing to change that view.

The home side managed to take the match 9-5, although every game was won by 10 points or less. It was Steve Viney’s 21-11 victory that helped them take the all-important aggregate.

Captain Bob Stewart was top performer for Hawcoat, with a 21-14 triumph.

Askam have seen their form in the first half of the season desert them a little of late.

However, they took the honour of being the only away side to manage a win as they visited Walney Park and returned with a 10-5 success.

Kenny Knowles was in unstoppable form at top man for Askam, well supported by sons Gareth and Jack. With nephew Chris Atkinson also winning well, it was a case of keeping it in the family for the Sandrats.

Putting up a fight for the Park, old boys Stan Halesworth and Dougie Milburn rolled back the years with fine triumphs.

King Alfred and Lindal Moor have just about hung on to the leaders’ coat-tails so far this season and, although a close result has not helped either’s cause, that is exactly what happened on the Island green.

The teams tied with six games apiece, but thanks to a great 21-8 win from Mr Consistent Mike Hool, the Alfred took the aggregate by three chalks.

At the top of the sheet, the two young Daniels fought out a game with possible merit consequences as Daniel Smith, of Lindal, was victorious over Daniel Edmonds.

The other three matches in the division all resulted in comfortable triumphs for the home sides.

Co-op easily dispatched a Roose side who struggled to get used to the Dane Avenue green. The Daves – Dawes, Pedley and Ryder – all had brilliant single-figure wins, while Chris Corkill led the way for Roose, with Mike Irving and Harry Curwen gaining their other points.

Dalton Cricket entertained Ulverston Cons A, who had been on a good run of late.

However, the cricket club were just too strong, with top man Gareth Jones leading by example and Steve Davey and Richard Sharples playing supporting roles. For the Cons Club, Steve Porter was in scintillating form.

Post Office visited Salthouse and could only muster three wins, courtesy of Mike Fieldhouse, Roly West and Basil Woodall.

Mark Burns was unstoppable in a 21-3 success for Salthouse, with Barry Asbury and John Taylor backing him up well.
