HAWCOAT Park hold a nine-point lead with five weeks remaining in Sharples Lettings Furness and District Bowling League Division One.

They continue to evade the grasp of the Police, who in turn are seven points clear of King Alfred, with Lindal a further five points back in fourth. The Alfred and Lindal haved a game in hand of the teams above them.

Ominously for the other clubs, the leaders have home games against Askam, Red River and Police before completing their season at Roose Community.

Hawcoat returned with 10 points from a tough away match at Post Office, with Gary Harris, 21-7, and Tonie Moxham, 21-8, their leading winners. Barry Woodall had the game’s best score of 21-6 for the Posties.

King Alfred beat rivals Police 11-3, with Tony Whitehouse in tremendous form, triumphing 21-5. John Reilly, 21-8, and Barry Lowden – keeping his one-win merit lead advantage – were also successful . Stewart Turnbull, 21-9, was the Coppers' best.

Lindal are clinging on to hopes of retaining their title, but they must rely on a collapse from their rivals after losing 10-4 at Red River, where Keith Roebuck, 21-8, and Andy McDonald won in style. Daniel Smith had a good success for the Villagers as he remains second in the merit standings.

Hawcoat Park A must have thought they had their first win of the season in the bag when 7-3 up and 20 in front on the aggregate at home to Salthouse. But visiting captain John Taylor had other ideas and came off the green a 21-5 winner. Chris Lloyd carded a 21-11 scoreline and earned his team a 8-7 victory.

Roose Community had a 11-4 success at Dalton CC, with Tom Harris, 21-6, and Derek Yates, 21-8, the men in form. Jack Singleton took a 21-8 triumph for the Cricketers.

At Walney Park, Co-op SC's poor season continued with a 9-5 loss, despite a great 21-5 win from Dave Jackson. Paul Millburn, 21-7, and Kevin Dixon, 21-8, were leading Park players.

In Division Two, King Alfred A are looking good for the title after visiting Barrow Island and coming away with the most points any team has managed this season, 11. Ian McDonald, 21-6, was their star player.

After 11 consecutive wins, Dave Leece has been knocked off the top of the merit table after losing 21-18 to another contender, Roly Price. Leece does have a game in hand on his main rivals.

Lindal A's 13-1 thrashing of bottom side Kirkby means are 14 points adrift of the leaders. Dave Bennett, 21-0, John Crompton, 21-2, Kevin Rooney and Dave Mackenzie, both 21-5, and Ian Leach, 21-9, excelled, with Stewart McGlaughian preventing a clean sweep.

Glaxo SC have not given up hope of promotion as their 11-4 win at rivals North Scale moved them five points behind the Walney club with a game in hand. Four of the works side's remaining six matches are at home.

Chris D’Leny was in terrific form for the visitors, winning 21-5, while homester Chris Irvine is still unbeaten after 16 matches.

John Atkinson triumphed 21-3 as Co-op SC A beat Hawcoat Park B 12-2, and victories from Trevor Taylor, 21-5, and Alan Stevenson, 21-7, helped Kirkby A overcome West Shore 12-2.

A 21-6 scoreline from Jeff Howard was cancelled out by Chris Atkinson winning 21-4 as Askam A came away from Roose Community A 9-6 to the good.

Despite losing three games 21-20, Salthouse A beat King Alfred B 8-6, with Geoff Carlisle’s 21-7 success helping them take the aggregate.

With all of the bottom-four teams still to play, Police A look nailed-on to lift the Division Three title.

Four club stalwarts, Nigel Burns, 21-2, Keith Churchman, 21-3, Arthur Adams, 21-6, and Ian McBride, 21-8 helped them beat Red River A 11-3, for whom Dave Pullin had a fine win to remain a point behind Chris Johnson and still in contention to lift the merit prize.

Johnson won 21-10 and Ian Littlewood 21-9 for a West Mount B team growing in confidence with their eighth victory from their last nine games. Their latest victims being the side above them, Walney Park A. Mark Lamb, 21-6, and Paul Cargan, 21-7, were the Park side's best.

Dalton CC A are almost certain of being promoted after winning 12-3 at Roose Community B, with single-figure triumphs from Harry Dagger, 21-3, Geoff Langhorn, 21-5, Peter Davey, 21-6, and Keith Birkbeck, 21-9.

Hawcoat Park C claimed their second win of the season in style, beating Salthouse B 13-1. Andrew McNicol, 21-5, Neil Coward, 21-6, and Mike Muldoon, 21-7, did the business.

Around the corner, wins of 21-5 by Gerry McDonald and 21-7 from Peter Jeffries helped Co-op SC B beat Barrow Island A 8-6.

Barry Morrow, 21-3, was the star as West Mount came back from Glaxo SC A 11-4 to the good, and in an all-Walney affair, Walney Park B defeated rivals West Shore A 11-3, with Jim Elliott, 21-4, and Alan McMurray, 21-6, the men in form.
