THE final countdown has started in the Alan Myerscough (Ford) sponsored Ulverston and District Bowling League, with this week proving a test of stamina as well as nerve as many teams had two fixtures.

In the biggest match-up, Hawcoat Park entertained Ulverston Cons A for a potential title-decider.

The encounter did not disappoint, as the two teams traded blows before Hawcoat took the spoils 9-5, claiming seven games, and the aggregate by a single chalk.

The top two of Roy Moxham and Gary Harris led the way, while Danny Monks was in glorious form for the Cons in his 21-6 victory.

The result was even more vital for the leaders as they had suffered a 10-4 defeat a day earlier at Red River.

Rolling down the River is never an easy task and with the hosts' fab four at the top all winning comfortably, the game always looked to be in their control.

This result sees the Reddies leapfrog the Cons into second, although they have played a game more and are still outsiders for the crown.

At the other end of the table, Lindal Moor A will be dropping back into Division Two, but with their youth programme bearing fruit it will not be long before they are back up.

It is hard to see beyond Roose for the other relegation spot, as they suffered two more defeats.

Co-op welcomed them to Dane Ave but sent them home with just four points and this was followed with a much closer game when Lindal visited Roose.

The village outfit managed to take the aggregate points by three chalks and the match 9-6. Keith Johnson was the star man for Lindal on his former stamping ground, with a 21-9 win.

The other team to record a double success were Askam. They had two outstanding results, firstly at home to Glaxo, 11-3, then on a visit to the Post Office where they sign, sealed and delivered a 10-5 result.

Double winners for the Villagers were Graham and Andy Rigg, Stuart Currie, John Hamilton and topman Kenny Knowles.
