Bowes and Corkill lead Roose to fine Furness Senior Bowling League win

ROOSE Community bounced back from defeat to produce a stunning 6-4 win over King Alfred in the Deltawaite Ltd Furness Senior Citizens’ Bowling League.

Having shared the games four-each, Roose claimed a single-chalk aggregate win in the Division One encounter.

Their cause was boosted by Bill Bowes' and Chris Corkill’s single-figure wins, while Roly Price triumphed to single figures for the Alfred.

Co-op, Hawcoat Park and West Shore made it two wins in two, but newly-promoted Ulverston Cons, Barrow Island A and North Scale are all yet to win.

Champions West Shore were 8-3 victors against Barrow Island A at Cavendish Park, with Dave Mellen, 21-7, and Brian Beard, 21-9, heading the list. The Island’s Peter Minnis made it two wins from two.

Hawcoat Park made the short trip to West Mount a fruitful one, claiming an 8-3 success, with Bill McLaughlin and Paul Cain their pick. Last season’s merit winner, Ken Baines, was a single-figure victor for the Mount.

Co-op made their first trip to Church Walk, the home Ulverston Cons, in a number of years, and came out on top 8-3. They were well led by Kenny Judge, 21-3, Les Vickers, 21-7 and Dave Dawes, 21-9, with Dave Nicholson responding 21-9 for the Cons.

Lindal look like being a force this season with the addition of a couple of new faces. They won 8-3 at North Scale.

Among the points were Chas Crellin, 21-5, and Brian Andrews, with Glyn Stevens, 21-9, the best for the home side.

Hawcoat Park A made it a club double by beating visitors Salthouse 8-2, with Ian France, Mike Bowyer and Roy Twiname winning their games.

The remaining match saw rivals Askam and Dalton CC face-off, with the former triumphing 8-2. The stand-out individual performances came from Askam’s Ted Tyson, 21-4, and the Cricket Club's Danny Smith, 21-3.

In Division Two, Dalton CC A beat Askam A 8-2 . There were single-figure wins for the Cricketers' Alan Haines and Askam’s Geoff Caine.

Roose A made it a club double over King Alfred, triumphing 6-5 over their A-team, with Ken Delves, 21-5, the feature.

Glaxo added steam to their quest for a quick return to Division One with an 8-2 victory against West Mount B. There were single-figure triumphs for Eric Worsley, Terry Rhodes and Rod Lewis, as well as the Mount'sBob Ward.

Despite only winning three of the eight games on offer, Co-op B took the aggregate and the match 6-5 at Salthouse A. This was due to 21-9 single-figure successes for Gordon Macgregor and Terry Weir, while Stuart Patton, who is due to leave the area shortly, was a winner for Salthouse.

The all-Walney affair saw the games shared four each, with hosts West Shore A claiming the aggregate and a 6-4 win over neighbours Walney Park B.
