SHANE Toal was unable to help prevent Scotland suffering a defeat in their Rugby League World Cup warm-up match against the New South Wales Country Under-23 team on Friday morning.

The Barrow Raiders winger was on the interchange bench for the match in Ballina and got some valuable playing time under his belt ahead of the tournament getting under way next week.

However, it proved a tough day for Toal and his Scotland team-mates as they went down 50-14 to the Country outfit, although they were without the likes of Danny Brough, Luke Douglas, Matty Russell and Danny Addy

The Scots had led 10-6 inside the opening 20 minutes, but the hosts took control from then on and although the Bravehearts did manage another unconverted try through Will Oakes, they had little answer to the Country youngsters.

Scotland, coached by ex-Raiders boss Steve McCormack, now prepare for their opening game of the World Cup against Tonga a week on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Jermaine McGillvary ran in two tries as England eased to a 74-12 win over a Combined Affiliated States side in their warm-up game in Perth.

Former Raiders loan player McGillvary, fellow winger Ryan Hall, Tom Burgess and Luke Gale all went over twice, while there were single tries for, Elliot Whitehead, George Williams, James Roby, Alex Walmsley, Kevin Brown and Kallum Watkins.

Jonny Lomax, who was rested as a precaution, was the only member of Wayne Bennett's 24-man squad not to get a run-out again an Affiliated States team coached by Joel Reddy, the son of former Barrow player and coach Rod.

Meanwhile, Brad Singleton has been settling into the Ireland set-up well, according to Leeds Rhinos team-mate Anthony Mullally.

The prop, who came through the Barrow Island youth set-up, qualifies for the Irish team by virute of his mother being from Northern Ireland and has been keeping close to another one of the Wolfhounds' Cumbrian players.

“Brad is rooming with Kyle Amor so those two have never left each other's side talking about Cumbria the whole time,” said Mullally.

“There are a few new lads and no one is left out. We need to have a big start against Italy if we are going to reach the knock out stages and we are working hard in training to make sure that happens.”
