TOM Loxam is set for another start against Toronto Wolfpack tomorrow as Barrow Raiders head coach Paul Crarey shuffles his pack for the visit of the Canadian side in the Betfred Championship.

Two of the former Royal Marine's seven appearances for the Raiders in his first season of professional rugby league came against the Wolfpack last year and he impressed Crarey with his performances in both.

A bruised sternum suffered by Andy Litherland against London Broncos last Sunday means Loxam gets his chance in the centre alongside Declan Hulme, who has been cleared to play following a head injury, and Crarey has backed him to shine again.

“Tom will do a good job for us and he's defensively sound,” said Crarey. “Tom has done really well and we don't want him here not play, we want to develop him as well and it will be a big test for him.

“He's been brilliant and he's come on a bomb. He's probably a winger-centre for us and he can play wing just as well, but he can defend and it's going to be a tough ask for the outside backs against these lads this weekend.

“But he's up to the challenge and we're going to give him an opportunity to have a go.”

Another player coming into the side is Karl Ashall, who will slot in alongside Jamie Dallimore in the halves and revive the partnership the pair formed there while playing for North Wales Crusaders.

Ashall has played most of his Raiders career at hooker, but comes in at scrum-half due to Lewis Charnock being ruled out with a shoulder injury which he is due to have an MRI scan on, scheduled for February 22.

Meanwhile, Crarey has told those players who have yet to feature they will get a chance in either next week's home game against Leigh Centurions or the trip to Batley Bulldogs on February 25.

“Lads have got to be patient, and why we picked the new guys was we wanted to integrate them into our systems because pre-season has been horrendous with the weather and the fixtures we didn't get,” said Crarey.

“We've had to use these first four games to do it and luckily they're not against the teams around us, so we can use them to gel everyone into our side.

“Some lads aren't happy with that and you can see it in their faces when they're not selected, but they'll get their chance and two people are getting a chance this year through injuries, and that will probably continue throughout the year.”
