BRETT Carter is hoping another Rugby League World Cup adventure can take him beyond the confines of home after being named in Scotland's provisional squad for this year's tournament.

The Barrow Raiders winger featured for the Bravehearts on these shores at the last World Cup in 2013, although both of his appearances came at his then-home ground of Derwent Park in Workington.

It is little wonder Carter is hoping to be on the plane heading out to this year's global gathering then, which is being co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

“The last one was in England and the two games I played in were both at Workington, so to have seven weeks in Australia would be a bit of a bonus for the end of the year,” said Carter.

“It's always a massive honour for me to play to Scotland. I've only played six times for them, but I've always been included for the past few years.

“It's always something when it comes to the back end of the season, I'm hoping I can pull on the Scotland shirt again, so fingers crossed.”

The 29-year-old is eager to be included as he knows it could well be his last chance to play at a World Cup too, but is under no illusions it will be tough to force his way into the reckoning.

Among the players he is up against in his position are Warrington Wolves' Matty Russell, Wigan Warriors' Lewis Tierney and 18-year-old Cameron Graham, who recently made his debut for NRL side South Sydney Rabbitohs.

However, Carter has kept in regular contact with Scotland head coach Steve McCormack and is aiming to do stay in his thoughts for the rest of the year in an effort to make the ex-Raiders boss' final squad.

“I spoke to Steve McCormack and he always likes to include me every year, even when I've been a bit unsure whether I'll be able to because of injury,” said Carter.

“He's always been keen to have me in and with some of the names in that squad, it's a massive achievement.

“Whether I'll get to go or not, I'm not quite sure, but just to be included is a bit of a boost.”
