HIS baby daughter may be causing him to lose sleep – but picking up bookings is providing no restless nights for Liam Hughes.

The midfielder returns to action for Barrow AFC this weekend after serving a two-game suspension for collecting 10 yellow cards during the season.

It was the 24-year-old's second ban of the season – he sat out one match when he reached the five yellow card-mark – and he admits some of them have been for silly offences.

His most recent came in the 0-0 draw with Sutton when he was booked in the aftermath of an incident with saw a U's player bundled into the AFC dug-out at Holker Street.

His offence was his reaction rather than anything in the build-up, with his indiscretion forcing him to sit out the National League matches with Tranmere Rovers and Eastleigh.

But, while acknowledging he can be over-vocal occasionally, he does not apologise for it, believing it shows he is giving his all for the Barrow cause.

“There are some silly yellow cards, and you can't argue that,” said former Cambridge United man Hughes. “But I wear my heart on my sleeve – I'm not one to hold back if I disagree with something – and I like to put a tackle in as well.

“If I feel that the decisions aren't maybe being fair to my team-mates or myself, then I'm not one to hold back. I just care, that's what it is – maybe a little bit too much and I get myself into bother, but I just want what's best for the lads.”

Hughes is not the only Barrow player to have come a cropper of an accumulation of yellow cards.

Richie Bennett missed the same two matches as his team-mate after he was also booked against Sutton, while Jordan Williams misses Saturday's match against Dagenham and Redbridge and Tuesday's visit of Wrexham following a 10th caution of the campaign at Eastleigh last weekend.

Hughes sees this as a sign the whole team are battling hard for the cause, rather than a symbol of indiscipline, and said: “It's swings and roundabouts. I've got a two-match ban for it, which is gutting, but it shows I care, and all the players are like that. This is a game where the passion comes out, it brings it out in the fans, the players and staff – it brings out that fire.

“Jordan, me and Richie have all got bans, but it's with the right intentions.”
