WORK has been carried out to make the Brian Arrowsmith Stand at Holker Street safe after Hurricane Ophelia ripped part of the roof off.

The grandstand was damaged in the storms on Monday night, with part of the roof flying off into Wilkie Road.

With Storm Brian set to hit Furness this weekend, the Bluebirds brought in contractors to remove loose panels and reduce the risk of further damage being cause to the structure.

Barrow AFC managing director Andrew Casson confirmed the club's insurance provider had examined the damage and given the go-ahead for work to be carried out to repair the stand.

Scaffolding is set to be put up around the affected area after the weekend, though no timescale for the repairs to be completed is yet in place.

“We had the local services come out and take the loose panels off to make it safe in advance of the storm that's coming through this weekend,” said Casson.

“From there, it will be about getting the scaffolding up in advance of next Saturday to block off that section of the stand.

“Primarily, we will cordon off the area so that people are not sitting underneath the area where the roof no longer is, and we will go from there.”

He added: “The insurance people will handle everything going forward, there are no problems or issues with that.

“We don't know how long the work will take. They will have to do some assessment to see the extent of what needs replacing.”
