JORDAN Williams is set to sit down and talk with potential new clubs today and tomorrow as he looks to a future away from Barrow AFC.

At least two Football League clubs – one from League One and one from League Two, the latter believed to be Lincoln City – have expressed an interest in landing the Bluebirds' star wideman.

AFC chief executive Austin Straker confirmed Williams and his agent were due to meet with two clubs to discuss potential deals, though he expects other interested parties will come in before he makes his expected exit from Barrow.

“Talks are continuing with Jordan and his agent,” he said. “There are some meetings set up this week to see if there is any progress, if they can agree personal terms, to see what they are offering.

“If they say they want him to play in the development squad or sit on the bench for the first year, he may well turn round and decide not to go.

“There are the two clubs who have already made contact, but my belief is there will be others before any deal is made.”

Williams, 24, is set to break the record for the fee paid for a Barrow player, eclipsing the £45,000 believed to have been shelled out by Luton Town for Jason Walker in November 2010.

He has had a stellar impact at Holker Street over the past 18 months after making the move up three divisions from Northwich Victoria in the final days of 2015.

He made 70 appearances – 67 of them starts – and scored 20 goals for the Bluebirds, attracting interest last summer and in January from Football League clubs.

There were said to have been six-figure bids for his services last summer, with AFC believed to have put a price tag of around £250,000 on one of their prized assets.

It is not known if those figures have been matched this time around, although he now has only a year left on a contract signed a year ago so the asking price may have dropped.

It is by no means certain a deal will be agreed – although it seems highly likely, and Straker added: “Jordan has to believe this is a move for his best interests. If the terms aren't good for him, then it's not good going.

“It's a bit like when Joel Dixon (the AFC goalkeeper) came to us. He had been offered terms with Football League clubs, but he wasn't going in as the number one choice goalkeeper. He said the last thing he wanted was to be sat on the bench for a year or two without any chance to play. That's why he took a chance and came to the National League instead.

“I'm sure Jordan will be looking at things the same way. He will not want to be sat there not playing. He works hard, he trains hard, he fights for his place – and he will want to know he is in with a chance of being in the starting 11 or 16.

“That's all for him to decide, then there will be the financial side with the club and what is being offered here. It has to be sorted both ways.”

Williams had hinted at a potential AFC exit before the end of last season.

When asked if he expected to be at Barrow for the 2017/18 campaign, he said: “Possibly. We’ll see what happens.”
