BARROW AFC have turned down offers for ‘certain players’ as Football League sides circle around their talented stars.

Full-back Nick Anderton is one player at the centre of a transfer-window scramble to land his services, while Jordan Williams has also attracted interest.

Manager Paul Cox issued a statement at lunchtime yesterday confirming that written offers have been received, while not identifying the players concerned.

It said: “Over the weekend the club have received written offers for certain players. The offers that have come in do not meet the club’s valuation. We will endeavour to keep everyone up to date with any future developments.”

Clubs including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Rotherham United and Bradford City have all been linked with bids for Anderton’s services – though Bradford ruled themselves out of the running early yesterday afternoon.

The 20-year-old former Preston North End youth has impressed for the Bluebirds throughout the season – featuring in every game in the National League, FA Cup and FA Trophy.

His performances have caught the eye of several Football league teams, with the race now on to land his signature before the transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.

Barrow AFC chief executive Austin Straker confirmed there had been interest in the player, with discussions now ongoing about a potential move away from Holker Street.

“A number of clubs have expressed an interest in Nick,” said Straker. “Figures are beginning to be discussed and the club will sit down with Nick, if necessary, to consider the best options.

“There are several clubs and bids are beginning to be put together.”

He added: “There have been tentative discussions. There have been lots of scouts here watching us – last week, we had in the region of 20 scouts watching us.”

While no specific fees have been mentioned, reports have suggested Bradford boss Stuart McCall had tabled an offer in the region of £75,000 for Anderton before deciding against signing him.

The left-back signed a two-year deal at Holker Street in the summer, having spent lengthy loan spells at the club in each of the past two seasons.

AFC boss Cox was due to sit down and speak with the player, his representatives and officials from interested clubs yesterday, after a behind-closed-doors match at Bury where he was watching several potential new recruits for Barrow.

Williams is another Bluebirds player to have attracted interest – having been the subject of bids before the start of the season from Football League sides.

Then, clubs failed to meet Barrow’s valuation on the former Northwich Victoria winger, believed to be around the £250,000-mark. The bids that came in during the summer are thought to have been closer to £100,000.

Interest in striker Byron Harrison is thought to have waned since he picked up an ankle injury against Lincoln City last week, which could keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Ross Hannah scored twice and Harry Panayiotou once in the behind-closed doors game against Bury, which the Bluebirds won 3-2.

Hannah has netted in each of AFC’s last two matches – against National League top-two Lincoln City and Forest Green Rovers – after coming off the bench. He has been linked with a possible move away from Barrow of late, possibly on loan to AFC Fylde.
