HE scored his first goal for the club on Tuesday – now new Barrow AFC striker Inih Effiong wants to go out and get some more.

Effiong made an immediate impact after coming off the bench in the 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers.

With his first touch, barely 90 seconds after entering the field of play, the 26-year-old was pouncing on a spilled ball from Rovers keeper Scott Davies under pressure from Moussa Diarra to stab home and spark wild celebrations among team-mates and supporters.

His strike – a first AFC league goal for more than six hours – sparked a comeback which saw Jordan Williams net a 20-yard stunner six minutes later to give AFC a first National League win in four and put them back within two points of the play-offs.

The former Biggleswade Town and St Albans City front-man was thrilled to get on the scoresheet for his new club for the first time, and said: “It feels amazing. It was a good experience. It's different scoring a goal here than when you are down at Biggleswade – the fans really drive you on and it was a good experience.

“Sitting on the bench, I was analysing that Moussa was winning a lot of headers, and people weren't coming in and around him that much. The manager has said to make sure I was in and round him when he did it, and I was just there. Either I was going to win a header or he was going to win a header, and I was just there at the right time.

“It's what I've been doing my whole career – you just have to be in the right place at the right time, and the ball will come to you.”

He added: “I've been biding my time. I was injured and I knew I couldn't just get straight back in. I've always said, and I've said to the boys, that I felt if I got more than 20 minutes, then I think I'm going to score. You just want to get that opportunity to play and show what you're good at. I score goals – I knew the team hadn't scored in four games, and I was eager to get out there and help as much as possible.

“Now, I've got to do exactly the same – work hard for the team, work hard for the players, and hopefully get on the scoresheet again.

“Hopefully I can get a start soon, I'll work hard and hope to get more goals.”

On the back of Tuesday's win over Tranmere, Barrow head to Eastleigh tomorrow firmly back in the play-off hunt (3pm kick-off).

Three points in Hampshire could see them back into the top five – depending on how Gateshead and Aldershot get on at Wrexham and Guiseley respectively, with Dover having no game.

Effiong insists the belief has never left the AFC changing room and the towering forward said: “There is a lot of belief in the changing room. We just need to believe in ourselves as a team.

“We never doubted ourselves to say that we weren't good enough. We know we're good enough and we have the depth to show we're good enough.

“It was just a case of putting in a performance. What Tuesday does, coming from 1-0 down against a team like Tranmere, is show the spirit we have at the moment.”
