PAUL Cox continued to urge Barrow supporters not to get carried away after the Bluebirds claimed a second home win of the season.

A brace from Jordan Williams and a first Bluebirds goal from Ross Hannah helped seal a 3-2 victory over Chester at Holker Street.

But AFC were made to fight all the way by the visitors, who scored two goals in four second-half minutes to make for a tense finale.

Cox compared the game to last season's 4-3 defeat by Tranmere – when Barrow were 3-1 up going into the final minutes – only this time they took the points.

“We look at our game management and it wasn’t good today, reminiscent of the Tranmere game,” he said. “I don’t if we thought we found the game too easy at 3-0 up with half-an-hour to go, or the players relaxed.

“We got away with it tonight and we didn’t get away with it against Tranmere, we lost the game. I always want to look at the positives and I hope we learn by it tonight having got away with the three points. It’s a massive learning curve for this group of players as we continue.

“I’m hoping, because we’ve had some half-decent names sign, that people weren’t expecting that we were going to hit the ground running and we were going to ride into the sunset by Christmas, because it was never going to be that easy.”

Cox spoke again about the need to bring in new players to add to a squad which started small and has already suffered injuries.

Danny Livesey missed the clash with a knee problem, Paul Turnbull saw on the bench to give his injured ankle a rest and Shaun Beeley lasted just 45 minutes before a recurrence of his groin issue forced him off.

In that contest, getting two wins from the first four games is seen as huge to Cox, who added: “Just getting the results is massive. If I’m honest, it’s a case of damage limitation until we get some new, fresh bodies in through the door who are going to affect this group with a positive mind-set.

“I’ve had a chat with the group about competition for places. If you’re a professional – and a true professional – and a true winner, you don’t get down about competition for your place, you use it as a motivating factor.

“We’re low on numbers, even lower after tonight, but we need some good players coming through the door. The problem we have got is there are loads of positive talks with the chairman, but we’ve lost out on a player today to a club in our league.

“Me and the chairman know exactly what is needed. We’re positive about getting the players in, but the players have to be right for us and have to be better than what we have got, or improve the squad. They’ve also got to come at the right price, because I’m not going to break any financial infrastructure just to get us through a tough patch in terms of bodies. More than anything, they’ve got to be the right personality for this dressing room. It’s a good dressing room with good characters.

“All these things have to come into play when we’re looking for somebody.”
