PUTTING Tuesday's goalkeepeing error behind him will be a test of character for Barrow AFC stopper Jon Flatt.

Manager Paul Cox and his team know they will have their part to play in ensuring the on-loan glovesman does not let the mistake which led to Wrexham's goal in the 1-1 draw at Holker Street.

Flatt failed to properly control a difficult back-pass from gull-back Shaun Beeley in the 93rd minute, chesting the ball down and then swiping at thin air as he attempted to clear.

The ball fell to Wrexham winger – and former AFC man – Paul Rutherford, who was able to take his time and calmly pass the ball home.

While Rutherford was mobbed by his team-mates, Flatt punched the ground in frustration – though Moussa Diarra's 97th-minute goal ensured Barrow took a share of the spoils.

After the final whistle, Flatt walked the length of the Wilkie Terrace applauding and seemingly apologising to AFC fans.

Cox knows such mistakes – Flatt also saw a goal-kick hit the back of Matt Tubbs and be slotted home at Eastleigh in controversial fashion two weeks ago – could weigh on a keeper's mind, and said: “It's a test of character for Jon. He knows he's got the support mechanisms in place in and around the dressing room, he knows will have the support mechanisms from Mick, the goalkeeper coach, he knows he will them from me.

“What it is, when you make a mistake in this business as a young player, you have to get rid of it our of your head as quickly as possible. The longer it stays there, the more it snowballs and you end up making consistent mistakes.

“It's over. It's an uncontrollable. We can't do anything, we can't rewind. We just have to move on.

“Everything is positive. The players couldn't have done any more on Tuesday, they couldn't have worked any harder.

“I keep saying it will be an interesting end to the season. There will be some twists and turns – there will be some real moments that frustrate and some real moments that have us on a high. We have to deal with them.”

He added on the conceded goal against Wrexham: “It was a mistake by an individual, that’s all that it was. Saying that, Flatty has pulled off a tremendous save on Saturday when we are winning the game 2-1.

“There are no hiding places for goalkeepers, and I’m sure Flatty will become a better goalkeeper for it.

“He’s a young goalkeeper, learning his trade, and he has my 100 per cent support, and the players’ support, to bounce back.”
