BARROW AFC included a number of new trialists for their final pre-season match at Witton Albion.

Among the names on the team-sheet were former Lincoln City, Morecambe and Macclesfield Town centre-half Tony Diagne,ex-Luton Town and Lincoln midfielder Arnaud Mendy, and defender James King – who on Saturday accidentally reported for duty at Southport rather than Stockport.

Boss Paul Cox is still looking for a couple of final recruits before the National League season starts at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

He took the chance to field potential signings at Witton, with only five of his contracted players in the starting 11 – including former Cheltenham full-back Jack Barthram, whose signing was confirmed on the morning of the game.

Thierry Audel, Liam Hughes, Harry Panayiotou and Bradley Bauress also started, with Donovan Makoma and Stuart Moore on the bench.

Young goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom, a former Witton man, was named between the sticks, with Australian-born Cypriot forward James Demetriou and ex-Kilmarnock midfielder Martin Smith also starting.

Demetriou was on target in the first half, along with Panayiotou, who netted again after the break in a 3-1 win.

On the bench for Barrow, the team-sheet named former Plymouth Argyle striker Louis Rooney, ex-Harrow Borough man Joseph Oseyemi and Jack Finch – a midfielder released by Coventry City in the summer – among others.
