BARROW AFC manager Paul Cox hopes to take another look at triallist striker Aaron O’Connor in Tuesday’s match against Accrington Stanley.

The 32-year-old former Newport County and Forest Green Rovers front-man emerged as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Carlisle United at Holker Street.

He produced a lively 40-minute display, his best chance coming as he hit the post with a close-range effort.

The experienced Nottingham-based attacker could come into contention for the midweek match against League Two Stanley, with Cox looking to add to a front-line which includes Ross Hannah, Richie Bennett and Byron Harrison – the latter having joined up on Friday.

“Aaron is Aaron,” when asked about his feeling on the potential recruit. “I have known him since he was a young lad. He’s not a young boy now, I’ve watched his career and admired his career.

“The one where he hit the post is typical Aaron O’Connor – you give him a sniff of goal and he will usually hit the target.

“We will monitor him. We might have a look at him again on Tuesday to see what he’s about. At this level of football, our level of football, he is a quality footballer and you would never say never.”

Moves are already afoot to sign up goalkeeper Andy Couglin. The former Southport and Wrexham stopper has been on trial with the Bluebirds throughout pre-season, featuring in several games, though only as an unused substitute in the two matches at Holker Street.

Cox has made Coughlin the offer of a contract and is also hopeful of landing a centre-half – possibly ex-Sheffield Wednesday man Will De Havilland, who featured on trial against Nottingham Forest.

“We’ve got Andy Coughlin in and we’ve made him an offer,” said Cox. “There are a couple of others as well – there is a centre-half we are looking at – and we’re looking at maybe a loan or two.

“We’re working extremely hard, but it’s tough because every time we go in for a player of the quality we want, we’re in a queue. We understand that, we try and do things the right way and hopefully we will get our men.”
