MICKY Moore is hunting for goals as Barrow AFC welcome Torquay United to Holker Street tomorrow (3pm tomorrow).

The Bluebirds have scored just two goals in their last four games – drawing a blank in three of them – and none of strikers Adi Yussuf, Byron Harrison, Jordan White and Harry Panayiotou have netted in any of their last five outings.

Chances have been created and missed in that time, but interim boss Moore knows his team have to start finding the back of the net – and soon.

The visit of rock-bottom Torquay – winless and having conceded a league worst 23 goals in their 10 games so far – provides the perfect opportunity to put things right.

But then, the same appeared true of Tuesday's visit from second-bottom Guiseley, a game which played out as a poor goalless draw.

Moore will have fingers crossed the chances can be taken this weekend, and said: “We've just got to keep working hard, keeping getting into those positions, and try to create more chances than we are.

“I look back at the Fylde game, where we lost 1-0, and we had two great opportunities to go 1-0 up and didn't take them. We could have been three or four up against Boreham Wood, but we went 2-0 up and ended up winning 2-1. On Saturday, we scored a perfectly good goal that was chalked off, had one or two good opportunities. Then on Tuesday night, we had balls going into their box and we had the best chance of the game, Brad had a one-on-one.

“You can only work, and we will keep working hard, on keeping getting in those positions. Hopefully, some of the forwards or midfielders will take these chances.

“This time last year, Richie Bennett and Byron Harrison, everything they hit went in the back of the net. At the moment, we haven't got that luxury, because they aren't firing.

“But I take satisfaction in the work that has been carried out over the last three games. I look ate Boreham Wood, they scored and it was a mistake. We lost on Saturday and it was a mistake. Tuesday, we kept a clean sheet and we never looked in any danger of losing – I can't remember Stuart Moore having a save to make.

“When teams do come here, and look to frustrate us, we've got to have answers; the players have got to understand how to unlock the door, keep to the game-plan. Don't panic and keep knocking it forward.

“Tuesday will be a big learning curve, but we will dust ourselves down and we will go again ready for Torquay.”

Moore recognises that confidence is a key factor in Barrow rediscovering their touch in front of goal.

Harrison had been out of action for the best part of seven months with an ankle issue when he returned for Moore's first game in charge against Maidenhead last month.

Likewise, Yussuf sat out two games with a hamstring issue, with the former Grimsby man withdrawn at half-time on Tuesday night as the problem area had tightened up once more.

Both men have yet to score since their return – though Harrison had what appeared a perfectly-valid header ruled out against Tranmere last weekend, with Yussuf seeing an effort in the same game cleared off the line.

Moore is looking for all his forwards – as well as his midfield – to start producing in front of goal, and knows the importance that first goal for each of them could have in instilling belief.

He said: “Forwards thrive on confidence. Both the centre-forwards, Adi and Byron, have had injuries. They're back now, but are they 100 per cent? No. Everyone can see that.

“We've got to nurture them back into it. Adi came off on Tuesday because his hamstring was a little bit tight – nothing major, but I didn't want him to pull it. We need to protect him.

“Jordan and Harry, Jordan has scored a few goals, Harry got one at Solihull. But it's not just the forwards, midfielders as well, we are creating chances and opportunities, but goals change games.

“There were times on Tuesday night, there were lots of balls going in there, but we didn't have anyone who could put it away. It was fizzing across the six-yard box and we just had no-one who could put it in the back of the net.

“That's why forwards are hard to find who can score the goals that win games of football.

“Tuesday was going to be one of those nights where the first could would have seen a side go on and win it.”

There is the potential for Moore to changing his starting forward line, with both Panayiotou and White having featured in the majority of matches so far this season, with from the start or as a substitute.

Both came on in the second half on Tuesday, but Moore will assess the Gulls – who will be under new manager Gary Ower for the first time following his midweek appointment – before deciding what his best options are up front.

“We'll get the report from them and pick the team and the forward line that I think will go on and help us win a game of football.”
