WING ace Jordan Williams is confident Barrow AFC have masses of improvement in them as they seek to build on a solid start to the season.

The Bluebirds face Dover Athletic tomorrow, with both sides having a record of two wins, one draw and one defeat from their opening four fixtures to sit mid-table in the fledgling National League standings (3pm kick-off).

Williams scored a brace on Tuesday night – the second possibly having one in off Byron Harrison, though awarded to him: “Initially, I thought Byron had scored it, but if they’ve given it to me, then I’m going to take it!” said Williams – as Barrow claimed the second of their victories, 3-2 against Chester, with both triumphs so far coming at home.

Tuesday’s match saw AFC almost throw away a 3-0 lead, but they eventually held on for the points, with Williams recognising there is a lot more still to come from the team.

“It’s not been the best start to the season,” the former Northwich Victoria wideman, who joined Barrow in December, said. “But we’ve picked up seven points from four games and there is massive room for improvement.

“We’re not in top gear yet. But when we are, I don’t think there’s a limit to what we can do, I think we can push right to the top. But first we have to get there and be consistent. We need to keep working hard and working for each other. There is already progress, but we need to kick on a lot quicker.”

On the trip to Kent to take on Dover, with Barrow travelling much of the distance today, he added: “Three points would be nice, but we’re going a long way and you might think we would take a point. But I think we’re going to go for three, that’s definitely achievable.”

Williams has become a mainstay of the Barrow team since arriving at Holker Street just before the turn of the year.

He started 19 of the 20 National League fixtures he was available for last term – coming off the bench to score in the other – and earned both a maiden England C call-up and a new two-year contract with the Bluebirds during the close-season as a result.

Manager Paul Cox hailed him after his two-goal display on Tuesday – “Jordan is what he says on the tin. His second goal was just Jordan Williams – an excellent strike,” he said – but, while the 23-year-old has been pleased with his start to the campaign, he feels he too has more to offer.

“I’ve been pretty pleased with how I have been playing, but I know I can do better,” Williams said.

“I think it’s my decision-making, more than anything, that I need to work on – when to go, when not to go, and things like that, when to pass and when to take it on my own.”

Williams is building up a good partnership with full-back Nick Anderton on Barrow’s left so far this season, and he feels the new players throughout the squad are also settling in alongside their team-mates.

“There’s a very good understanding between us all out there,” he added. “With myself and Nick at left-back, we have a very good understanding. That’s important for the team to move forward, it could take time, but it’s happening.”
