STRIKER Ashley Grimes has left Barrow AFC to join Southport.

Grimes, 29, fell out of favour at Holker Street after the appointment of Paul Cox last November and had been told he could find a new club.

The experienced former Football League man had a year left on his contract with the Bluebirds, but has been allowed to join the Sandgrounders.

Grimes made 19 appearances for Barrow, 11 of them from the bench, but scored only once in that time – at Welling in January. He did not feature after February, by which point Cox had brought in both Jordan Williams and Ben Tomlinson as new attacking players.
