TYLER Smith is a teenager with a point to prove – and he is already going a long way to doing that at Holker Street.

The Sheffield United loanee – who joined the Bluebirds just days before the start of the National League campaign on a half-season loan – took his season’s tally to three on Tuesday.

His brace inside three minutes sent AFC to a memorable 3-2 win over Chesterfield and, added to his striker in the opening-day success against Havant and Waterlooville, ensured the fans on the terraces have already taken him to heart.

This is the 19-year-old’s first experience of senior football, and he is enjoying it to the full.

His lively nature on the field is matched by a smiling demeanour off it, and Smith wants to show everyone what he can do in front of goal for as long as he is with Barrow.

“I’ve come here to prove a point – I’ve come here to help the team,” he said. “The fans are great, and how they have backed me just drives me forward and makes me more excited with every game.

“Three goals already and an assist (on Tuesday), now I just want more.

Smith has started every game so far under manager Ian Evatt, and is delighted with the way things have gone since his arrival.

He sees a team who are willing to attack in numbers, and said: “It’s great here. As soon as I came, everyone has welcomed me really well – they get behind me a lot, they believe in me, and I got the two goals in a massive win, a great win for the club.

“The front-line, we’ve got pace, and that’s what you need on the counter-attack. If you’ve got pace and people willing to bomb forward, it’s going to win you games.”

The mission for the team now is to build on their last two results against Chesterfield and Leyton Orient when they go to the Gallagher Stadium this weekend.

Smith can see belief in the team is building, and says they are backing themselves to get results no matter who they are playing.

“The gaffer always says that he believes in us, and as a team we’re a really, really good team,” he said. “We’ve gelled together, everyone works hard, and if you work hard, you get results.

“The point at Orient took us into Tuesday, and we’re backing ourselves to win every game now. As a team, you need that to get points and results.”
