WALNEY Island took the spoils as Barrow and District Junior Football League Autumn Cup winners.

The Tummerhill youngsters came through two weeks of competition on the 3G pitch at Furness College unbeaten to claim the silverware.

Four wins and two draws from an entertaining morning of action – despite the heavy rain – left them standing atop a seven-strong group.

Vickerstown, too, went unbeaten, but four draws and two wins was only good enough for second spot, ahead of Barrow Island on goal difference.

In the Autumn Shield – for the teams who did not qualify in the top-seven from week one – Crooklands Casuals were the side to beat as they pipped Millom Junior Reds to the honours.

A 2-0 win against Barrow Island in their first match was key for Walney, giving them an early cushion over their rivals.

It was followed by a 1-0 successes against Holker Old Boys Hurricanes and Ulverston Rangers, before a stalemate with Vickerstown gave their fellow islanders some hope.

But a 1-0 victory against Barrow Celtic meant Walney were crowned champions with a game to spare, ending their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Millom Junior Blacks to preserve their record of clean sheets in every game.

Crooklands' Shield success came with an identical record of four wins and two draws – the first victory over Millom Junior Reds being crucial in deciding the final outcome of the competition.

Millom would not lose again – beating Furness Rovers, Dalton Juniors, Furness Cavaliers and Holker Old Boys Tornadoes and drawing with Barrow Wanderers – while Cassies drew twice, with Wanderers and Rovers, and beat their other opponents for a one-point margin come the conclusion of the day.

Barrow JFL fixtures secretary Nigel Holmes said: “All the matches were played in a good spirit despite the damp weather, and cheered on by a large support.

“Both the Cup and Shield groups were very closely contested, with several very close games which could have gone either way.”

The under-nines Autumn Cup and Shield finals were also played at Furness College following the conclusion of the under-eights event.

Holker Old Boys beat Crooklands Casuals 4-1 in the Cup final, with Shield honours going to Furness Cavaliers against Millom.
