Longsands Lynx U13s 2 Walney Island U13s 6

WALNEY Island are in the last-four of the Lancashire Cup after their six-shooters shot down Longsands Lynx in Fulwood.

Walney, wearing the colours of St Bernard's, who loaned the team their Year 8 tops, due to a clash with the hosts' colours, started slowly, with Longsands playing with more fluidity.

Against the run of play Joseph Nuttall hit a shot narrowly wide of the post in an early chance for Island.

Longsands' early possession paid dividends on 10 minutes when they opened their account.

The goal was to prove the catalyst for Walney, who immediately responded.

Joe Green dribbled from the halfway line and passed to Jayden Reilly, whose shot went narrowly wide.

The visitors kept up the pressure, with Green picking up the ball in midfield and surging through the heart of the midfield and defence to coolly place the ball past the Longsands goalkeeper.

Island continued to press and were now dominating play.

A long shot from Gary Ferguson went close, followed by a Reilly shot cleared off the line.

Longsands' attacks were thwarted by the central defensive partnership of Zac Whitehead and Joss Edwards.

After a goalmouth scramble, Walney central midfielder Tom Knott finished to give them a 2-1 lead.

Liam Wood was taken off with a knock to be replaced by Paddy Storey, who continued Walney strong presence on the left.

Just before half-time the margin increased when a superb through ball from Kian McDonald found Green, who finished clinically for 3-1.

Longsands started the second half positively and their early pressure resulted in a goal to reduce the deficit.

More pressure on the Walney goal forced excellent saves from Evan Rushton and strong tackling from Lewis McCracken.

The match changed on 52 minutes when a pinpoint through ball from Green found Ferguson, who rounded the keeper to make it 4-2.

Longsands continued to press hard and a shot hit the bar, Rushton made a terrific save a minute later, and a penalty appeal was turned down.

Alex Carling defended solidly to keep Longsands at bay, but by this time Walney were finishing strongly and looking dangerous.

A cross resulted in an excellent snap shot saved brilliantly by the Longsands keeper. The ball was spilled to Wood, who drove a fine shot to make it 5-2.

In the dying minutes, a perfect chip over the Lynx keeper's head by Green finished an impressive performance.
