THE home of cricket is calling to a talented Ulverston team who have made Cumbrian school sporting history.

Ulverston Victoria High School's table cricket side have become the first from the county ever to reach the finals of the national Lord's Taverners competition.

The success comes hot on the heels of UVHS's Sports Ability club's triumph in the regional rounds of the national boccia competition – another Cumbrian first.

After finishing third in the Cumbria competition last month, Ulverston secured a place in the northern table cricket finals at Durham University.

After winning all three of their qualifying rounds, UVHS came up against against Trinity Carlisle in the final, the team who had defeated them in the county semi-finals in Penrith.

In a tense match, requiring nerves of steel from both sides, as well as a lot of strategy, the result was a draw on both runs and wickets.

That meant the final had to be decided by a super-over – with two bowlers and two batters from each team going head-to-head with just three balls each.

UVHS captain Ella Tyson showed the ultimate poker face and led the team to victory.

All the players – Tyson, Daniel Aspinwall, Alfie Williams, Owen Latham, Michael Wyatt, Daniel Hopkins and Erin Mander – received gold medals as they brought the trophy home to South Cumbria.

UVHS are seeking support to help cover the costs of the trip to London, as the Lord's Taverners can only support some of the overnight accommodation bill.

They have already received £350 from Stagecoach.
