PLAYERS from Ulverston Rangers Girls Football Club have put in the extra mile in an attempt to raise funds for a trip to Spain.

Members of the under-12s and under-14s sides pumped out the miles as part of a sponsored walk around Ulverston.

They climbed the Hoad, visited Conishead Priory and trekked along the canal towpath – with a game of football and an ice-cream on the beach at Bardsea on the way – as they showed determination to fly out to the Costa Brava next Easter.

The players were joined by parents and coaches for the walk, which totalled just over 10 miles.

Paul Abbott, coach of the under-12s and under-14s sides, said the event was the first in a number of activities the girls would be undertaking in an attempt to raise £5,400. He said: “We want to take a team over to either play in a tournament or in friendlies.

“One of the boys teams did it last year and we thought we should try and take the girls. If we can raise that money, then we are all set to go next April. That gives us the time to raise the money.

“All the girls are up for it and the parents are up for it. It will be a great experience for them.

“The walk went really well. The girls really enjoyed it – there were a few who couldn’t make it, but those who went had a fabulous time.

“It was a stunning day.”
