WALNEY athlete Ryan Wilson produced a series of personal best performances to end the indoor season with four medals.

The Barrow and Furness Strider claimed a pair of silvers and bronzes competing across the North of England and Scotland in sprints and throws events.

In the North of England Championships at Sheffield's English Institute of Sport, Wilson contested the under-15s boys 60m and shot putt.

Rankings placed him 14th in the 60m, but he ran a personal best of 7.66 seconds to finish second in his heat, before clocking the same time for third in his semi-final.

The first two in each of the three semis were guaranteed a place in the final, with the two fastest losers also going through – with Wilson time good enough for a lane in the eight-man race.

He was able to relax and enjoy the experience, finishing sixth and clocking 7.66 for the third race in succession.

There was more success in the shot, as a throw of 11.09m, just 20cm short of his best, was good enough for second.

The Scottish Under-15s Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, saw Wilson compete in the 60, 200m and shot.

In the 60m heats, a false start could not stop the Barrow youngster winning his heat in another time of 7.66 seconds.

The semi-finals saw Wilson up against top-ranked Scottish sprinter Sol Stewart, but after a blistering start he held on to win the race in a new personal best of 7.56 seconds to qualify for the final.

He went into the final hopeful of claiming a medal, and after another blistering start to head the field, was eventually caught by northern Bronze medallist Lewis Cant, of Newcastle club Blaydon Harriers, who went on to win the race.

The next three places were anyone's guess, with three athletes crossing the line together. The electronic photo finish gave all three the same time to one-hundredth of a second, but they were separated by thousandths, with Wilson third behind Gateshead’s Northern 200m champion Josh Mckeown, with Stewart fourth.

Juggling the shot and the 200m proved difficult, with two throws missed in the former not enough to stop him taking bronze behind Gateshead's Northern champion Jack Halpin and Ross County's Reuben McFarlane, with a throw of 11.25m.

Wilson clocked a 200m personal best of 25.00 seconds in his heat and followed up with a harder run to finish second on 24.25 in the semi-finals, behind old rival Finlay Waugh, of Annan and District AC.

The final was a race to far for the Striders athlete, with the lack of running over the longer distance taking its toll, but he still managed fourth place and can be proud of his performances.

At the North East Championships in Gateshead, Wilson took silver in the 60m, before reaching the semi-finals in the same event at the Open England Championships at Sheffield, a race won by the top-ranked Jaleel Roper, of Hercules Wimbledon, with a time of 7.09secs just 0.04 seconds outside the British record.

Wilson is now looking forward to the outdoor season, which starts in April, working under the expert guidance of Paul Burns and Steve Thomas, the Barrow and Furness Striders sprints and throws coaches.
