INDOORS and outdoors, through fair weather and foul, youngsters enjoyed a multitude of sporting activities with Barrow AFC's community team.

A week of multi-sports at St Bernard's School occasionally saw the children having to run for shelter as the temperamental Furness climate came a calling.

But with basketball, dodgeball, cricket, tennis, hockey and golf all on offer, there was always something to ensure smiles were never far from their faces.

The 40-strong daily groups of five to 11-year-olds enjoyed a range of sports, some new to them, others more familiar, and at the end of each day wanted to know what was coming the next.

They were split into three groups, depending on age, allowing them to work with children their own age on skills suited to their abilities.

Apprentice coach Jamie Hodgson said the week had been a big success, adding: “We had three coaches, each with our own group, so one day my group might be doing cricket and the next basketball.

“There was some bad weather and one of the days when it started raining, we all went inside to play dodgeball and some fun games. We were originally doing tennis, but we had to come in and adapt and the teams all had fun playing each other.

“We were getting more children every day and they preferred doing different sports. They were always asking 'what are we doing tomorrow?' and they'd be happy when they found out.”
