Kirkby Stephen 2nds 0 South Lakes 7

SOUTH Lakes demolished Kirkby Stephen 7-0 to cement their place at the top of the Cumbria Women’s League.

Lakes took their tally to 17 goals in two games in 2016 as they followed up a 10-0 triumph over Ambleside with another crushing win.

However, the scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors, who had to work hard in the second half to keep a clean sheet against some keen youngsters in blustery conditions.

Both teams started nervously trying to find a breakthrough.

That came to South Lakes just 11 minutes after the pushback, following some slick short-corner play. Captain Holly Nuttall found Pam Robertson on the penalty spot and she slotted the ball past the keeper.

The visitors added their second four minutes later when quick link-up play between Rebecca Cook and Nuttall resulted in a through-ball to player-of-the-match, Emma Armstrong, who slotted the ball into the goal on the right post.

Two minutes later, Armstrong scored a carbon copy of her first, once again sweeping on to the right post after a perfect cross from Anna Stable.

Kirkby Stephen worked hard to take the game to the visitors and some swift attacking play saw them awarded a short corner, which was deftly dealt with by Gayle Mawdsley in the South Lakes goal, supported by Cook, Vikki Edgar, Suze Armstrong and vice-captain Cat Cooke.

Lakes then entered a second purple patch, with Gemma Jupp and Natalie Knowles linking well in the middle, resulting in a beautiful swept goal over the home keeper from Knowles.

The scoreline was soon stretched to 5-0 when Emma Armstrong claimed her hat-trick, deflecting the ball over the line from a Robertson strike.

Kirkby Stephen regrouped at half-time and came out strongly.

South Lakes struggled to get among them in midfield, despite constant running from Stable, Emma Armstrong, Suze Armstrong and Sarah Robinson.

The defensive trio of Cooke, Cook and Edgar supported Mawdsley to keep her third clean sheet of the season, while at the other end Robertson claimed her second and Robinson made it 7-0 two minutes before the end with a beautiful swept goal.

South Lakes face the long trip to Wigton this weekend to take on Dalston.
