WEST Mount bowler Rohan Massey Holmes was the star of the show in winning the Joe Wardman Trophy.

Massey Holmes overcame the challenge of Ethan Lowden in the final on a superb Salthouse Bowling Club green.

The champion received a one-point start from Red River youngster Lowden and the lead regularly changed hands until Massey Holmes went 12-10 up.

He extended the advantage to 14-10 two ends later, before Lowden closed the gap to 14-13. A double and two singles extended Massey Holmes' lead to 18-13.

Five more singles, two to Lowden and three to Massey Holmes and the match was all over, making 13-year-old Massey Holmes the 17th winner of the competition.

On his way to the final, Massey Holmes beat Josh Smith 21-18, Jack Brannon 21-10 and, in the semi-final, Fraser Rigg 21-18 on his way to the final.

Massey Holmes was cruising at 16-7 in that last-four match, but Rigg, who bowls at Askam, came back strongly to narrow the scoreline to 18-17 before eventually losing 21-18.

Home green starlet Adam Smith knocked out last year's winner Jayden Reilly 21-19 in the opening round, but then surprisingly went out by the same score to 12-year-old Rigg.

Lowden knocked out Junior Grand Master winner Sam Naylor 21-18 in the preliminary round, with Jack Last, 21-9, and Brogan Jones, 21-11, his next victims to set up a semi-final encounter with Shawn Fisher.

Fisher had surprisingly beaten the much-fancied Callum Sharples 21-10 in the previous round.

The Askam player could not repeat his form in the last-four, losing 21-7 to Lowden.

Joe Wardman introduced Salthouse stalwart Tommy Benson, who presented money to all the last eight competitors.

Wardman thanked Salthouse Bowling Club for the use of the green and the help received from Ken Howarth and others in running the competition.
