PRIMARY school pupils from across South Cumbria flung themselves wholeheartedly into the Furness Schools sportshall athletics finals at Hoops.

Children from Years 5 and 6 battled it out for honours over a series of track and field events.

The youngsters were battling it out to represent Furness in the Cumbria School Games finals, following the district's victory in the overall event last year.

Relay teams of boys and girls hurtled over obstacles and bounced off walls as they fought to be the fastest squad, while in the field events all the competitors took part in two disciplines.

All the schools taking part at Hoops had qualified through winning their local cluster events – through Walney School, Furness Academy, Dowdales, Ulverston Victoria and the Barrow Catholic schools.

The teams of six boys and six girls started out the afternoon of action in the relays, with various events including hurdles and obstacles races, as well as pure running from one end of the hall to the other and back again.

Watched by parents from the balcony, field disciplines saw foam javelins launched high and far, while pupils themselves flew through the air for the standing long jump and triple jump events.

Two teams will go forward to represent Furness against Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakes in the county finals.
