YARLSIDE Academy were delighted victors of the Furness Schools Years 3 and 4 Tri-Golf finals at Hoops.

After years of Victoria Academy domination, Yarlside broke their stranglehold over the competition with a strong showing.

A field of 80 children, making up eight teams from seven schools, contested the finals, showing off their putting, driving and wedge skills over a series of challenges.

With the distinctive blue plastic clubs in hand, Yarlside saw of the challenge of one of Low Furness's two teams, taking the title by the narrow margin of 24 points after all eight disciplines.

Victoria finished third, with the rest of the field made up of St George’s, Dane Ghyll, Pennington and St. Paul’s.

The teams qualified for this competition after spending several weeks working with PGA professional Paul Rawlinson, who attended their schools and put them through a competition, with the top-scorers advancing.

Furness School Games organiser Oliver Carswell was pleased with how the event went, and said: “The Tri-Golf competition went very well, with all the players having a lot of fun and working very hard throughout the morning.

“As much as this is a competition against other schools, it is also a competition against time.

“The more time you take during your turn, the fewer goes you have, which equates to less points scored.

“After the teams had completed four games, they were able to take a well-earned drink and then back to it for the final four matches.

“The leaders from Dowdales and Furness Academy, who oversaw the competition, also had to work hard as the kids were moving so fast, they didn’t want to miss any points scored.

“I want to say a big thank you to all the schools who entered teams, to the leaders for doing a great job and to Paul who trained the schools and helped me out a lot.”
