WIGAN Warriors roared into Millom over half-term, to the delight of the town’s keen young rugby league fans.

Around 55 children, aged between five and 14, spent a day working with four coaches from the Super League club’s Community Foundation.

While a storm battered the buildings and landscape outside, inside Millom Recreation Centre, the eager athletes pounded away in defence and attack over a day of great fun.

The expert coaches helped the children work on all the basics of rugby league, including grip, passing and catching, as well as setting them some more acrobatic exercises.

Shouting with joy as they dived head-long onto crash mats with balls in hand, and delighting in the chance to expend their school holiday energy, the day was a great success.

Millom Recreation Centre’s Tracy Kirk said: “It went really well, and we had a great turnout.

“The Wigan coaches were doing a mixture of different sports. There was a focus on rugby, but they also did a bit of cricket and things like that and the kids all had a great time.”

Plans are already in place for Wigan to return to Millom during the Easter holidays, on Monday, April 10. The recreation centre will also hold a gymnastics camp and a holiday club during the two-week break.
