CHETWYNDE B earned a place among the top tennis teams in Furness with victory in the Catholic and Walney Schools B-team final at Hoops.

Five teams – including C-team finals winner Chetwynde C – battled it out for a place in the A-team competition, with teams of two girls and two boys playing a series of singles matches.

The round-robin format pitted the two Chetwynde teams, South Walney Juniors, Holy Family and Vickerstown against each other in a round-robin format.

The matches saw the top-seeded boys and girls from each side play each other, with the second seeds from all the teams also clashing.

They were overseen by Year 8 students from Furness Academy, who did very well and received great feedback from the teachers and children.

Furness School Games organiser Oliver Carswell said: “The tennis in this competition was very good.

“You could tell that even in the B teams a lot of the children have had coaching away from their schools, on top of the great work the teachers do with them.

“Some of the players' techniques were excellent when striking the ball., leading to some very exciting games.”

The overall finals of the competition take place at Ulverston Leisure Centre today.
