SOUTH Walney Infants and Vickerstown made it through to the Furness finals of the Cumbria School Games Key Step Gymnastics tournaments.

Teams from the Catholic and Walney cluster gave their all in their competition at Vickerstown Primary School.

The Key Steps One, Two and Three events were held on the same afternoon, with youngsters from Year 1 up to Year 6 taking part and displaying their floor and vault skills.

As well as the hosts, South Walney, Holy Family and St Pius X all sent teams, with 12 of them spread across the three competitions.

Depending on the age group, children were required to perform different routines on both the floor and the vault – with set moves in the two lower levels and more freedom to interpret at Key Steps Three.

The judges were a mix of Furness Academy and St Bernard’s students, who oversaw the routines, providing each participant with a score out of 10.00, with marks deducted for any errors or omissions.

South Walney Infants triumphed at Key Step One, with Vickerstown taking the other two titles to move on to the Furness finals at Furness Academy, where they will take on the winners of the other cluster competitions.

Furness school games organiser Oliver Carswell said: “The competition went really well, which was down to the helpful staff at Vickerstown School.

“The facilities and equipment they have at the school for gymnastics are excellent.

“The judges did very well having to switch between the different Key Step levels, as they might have just scored a Key Step 1 team and the next team might be from Key Step 3.

“All the teams did very well, you could tell a lot of practice had gone into the routines as there were hardly any mistakes or parts missed.

“It was nice to see the older pupils were encouraging the younger pupils from their schools, which helped to settle their nerves.”
