TUMBLING primary school children took over the sports hall at Ulverston Victoria High School with acrobatic gymnastics displays.

Pupils from eight schools took to the floor and vault to contest the UVHS cluster Key Steps Two and Key Steps Three competitions.

The Year 3 to 6 youngsters displayed poise and flexibility as they put on their best routines to try and see their teams through to the next stage of the Cumbria School Games.

Sir John Barrow were on top of their games, winning both the Key Steps Two and Three titles among the large schools for the first time.

Their pupils were tasked with completed a set routine on both the floor and vault, with each child starting with a mark of 10.00, and having deductions made for any errors they made.

In the small schools competition, Church Walk were crowned the Key Steps Two champions, with Burlington School taking the honours at Key Steps Three.

Other schools to take part were Croftlands Juniors, Pennington, Low Furness, Penny Bridge and Ulverston St Mary's.

UVHS teacher Adrian Pearce was pleased with how all 17 teams performed during the course of the event, and said: “SJB won both of the large school events, which was the first time for them. With the small schools, Church Walk won Key Steps Two and Burlington won Key Steps Three – they were a very strong team, and they should do well in the next round.

“It was a fantastic day. It just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and bigger. In the past, we have had a maximum of two teams in Key Steps Three, but this year there were nine – it's getting really big.”

The next stage for the winning schools is the Furness area finals, which will take place at the Park Leisure Centre, Barrow, next month.
