ST Paul's emerged as the victors as South Cumbrian primary schools headed to Furness Cricket Club for the area Kwik Cricket finals.

Eleven teams from Barrow, Ulverston and Kirkby were among those competing on a sunny day at the Oxford Street venue.

Year 5 and 6 pupils battled it out in group stage matches, with the three group winners the best runners-up going through to the semi-finals.

Pairs of batters were each given two overs to score as many runs as they could, while every member of the opposition bowled a single over.

With several games taking place at the same time on the Furness outfield, there were balls flying left, right and centre, and shouts of joys and despair as six were hit and wickets were claimed.

St Paul's came through a nail-biting final against Sir John Barrow – triumphing by a single run in a game laden with sixes and big hits.

St Paul's had earlier beaten St Columba's in one semi-final, with Sir John Barrow overcoming St James.

Barrow cricket development officer Jake Woods was pleased with the high quality of cricket on show, and said: "It was a beautiful day – we couldn't have asked for better.

"We had more than 100 kids down playing cricket, and it was all of a good standard.

"St Paul's and Sir John Barrow played out a great final, there were a lot of big hits and big sixes, and everyone had a lot of fun."

St Paul's success followed victory for Millom St James in the other Kwik Cricket event, held at Barrow CC, where they beat Holy Family in the final.

Both victorious teams will now go through to the county finals, which will be held tomorrow.
