SOUTH Walney Juniors and Lindal and Marton School will carry the pride of Furness in the Cumbria School Games.

The two schools topped the standings in the district Quicksticks Hockey finals at Ulverston Leisure Centre.

South Walney, who had come through the Walney and Catholic schools cluster competition, and Lindal, who qualified from the Dowdales competition, were the best of the bunch on an afternoon of fast-paced action.

Year 3/4 teams from Yarlside Academy, Victoria Academy, St Columba’s and Low Furness also contested the event, with six-strong squads playing each other in a round-robin format.

Play went from end-to-end in the action-packed games, where two girls and two boys were on the field at any one time, with changes made at the end of each period.

Furness school games organiser Oliver Carswell was pleased at how close the matches were throughout the day, and said: “All the matches were exceptionally close, which is what you want to see.

“A lot of the spectators were commenting on how well all the teams were playing and how good the leaders were from Furness College.”

Both South Walney and Lindal and Marton will have to keep up their skills over the next eight months, with the county finals not taking place until the Cumbria School Games in Carlisle in July.
