TWO Millom BMX superstars will be pedalling around the globe this month as they represent Great Britain.

Siblings Jayden and Emie Seward are part of the national teams heading to Bordeaux, France, and Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA, for the European and World Championships.

Jayden, 11, and Emie, seven, are both among the top junior riders in the country – competing regionally and nationally almost every weekend between March and August.

Their efforts have seen them ranked in the top 10 in the country – Jayden was 10th, despite picking up a hand injury, mid-season and Emie second in their respective age-groups last year – and qualify for the continental and global competitions.

It will be Emie's first international event – she qualified last year, but did not travel – while Jayden has been as far afield as Colombia during three years at the top level.

Proud mum Karen Seward said: “It's a very exciting time for us, and the children are delighted to be selected. For them both to be in the top-10 nationally and be selected is an amazing achievement.”

Jayden was the first of the two to start riding BMX, getting on the bike for the first time when he was six, five years ago.

He was joined in racing action – with the youngsters pedalling as fast as they on courses with sharp turns and jumps in order to beat their opponents to the finish line – by Emie two years ago.

It all started when Jayden was on the internet, and Karen said: “Jayden watched a clip on YouTube one night, and it was a case of 'oh, I'd like to do that.' We went to Preston, and it just took off from there.

“With us doing it as a family thing every weekend, Emie just followed and has taken to it like a duck to water.”

Haverigg Primary School pupils Jayden and Emily travel to Preston – the closest national standard track – every week for training sessions.

The Preston Pirates duo go further afield for competition, with regional events taking place across the north of the country and national competitions from London to Scotland.

Jayden has three top-10 finishes in the national series under his belt this year, while Emie won in Birmingham.

They will be in France for the European Championships between July 13 and 16, with the Worlds following in South Carolina a week later.

Mum Karen added: “Both Jayden and Emie are extremely dedicated.

“As we live in a very remote area, extensive travel is always a necessity. In order to maintain the required standards to compete at national level, we are going away at least twice a week.”

As well as preparing for this year's European and World Championships, the Seward siblings are also competing in as many national and regional events as possible, so they can gain a ranking for next year and do the same again then.

The Sewards are looking for sponsorship to help them with the costs of competing across the UK and further afield.
