DOZENS of young children showed off the skills they have learned thanks to hard work with Barrow AFC Community in school PE lessons.

Youngsters from Yarlside Academy, Ramsden Infants, Cambridge Primary and Victoria Infants were among those demonstrating their prowess in a celebration event on the 3G pitch at Furness College.

The Year 1 pupils have spent 10 weeks working with the AFC Community team in their PE sessions as part of the Inspiring Infants programme.

Coaches from AFC have been visiting the schools every week to work on skills linked to the National Curriculum – such as passing and dribbling in a a variety of sports, including football, hockey and basketball. Children played each of the sports on the artificial pitch, impressing as they weaved their way up and down the playing area with the ball at their feet or with hockey sticks in hand.

AFC Community’s Margaret Straker said of the scheme: “It has been fantastic to watch the progress of the children over the past 10 weeks.

“The school staff and the coaches were able to watch on Thursday as the children who have been involved in the Inspiring Infants programme, came together to show what they have achieved.

“All the children were involved throughout the morning in small-sided games and in skills activities, and by the end of the morning there were lots of tired children ready to get back to school for their lunch after a busy time.”
